Remembering Gopinath Roy (1953-2017)

An Eternal Journey of A Creative Soul

Gopinath Roy (1953-2017)

Gopinath Roy, an alumnus Govt. College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, 1978 and in 1980, studied History of Art & Architecture and Art Appreciation from Calcutta University. Participated in various Group shows like Jehangir Art Gallery, Bombay, 1987, Gallery BF14, Kolkata, 1991, Gallery Kunst in Der Weldt, Germany, 1995 etc. He held many successful solo shows in various galleries in India. Received awards from Govt. of West Bengal State Academy, Kolkata, 1977-78, State Lalit Kala Academy, Kolkata, 1985. In the mid-nineties Gopinath mesmerized art lovers with his musical sculptures in stone, metal and wood. He takes various manifestations of nature and breathes music into them, producing three-dimensional musical sensations. He says- ‘To me nature is not inert. It is full of life. When water flows over stone, the latter undergoes changes in its shape, and it is a constant evolution in nature. From time immemorial that has been the way of life. The rhythmic sound of running water is a constant reminder of the journey of nature itself.’ Gopinath’s creations are expressions of this realization: the beauty of nature captured in poetic sculpture. It is this aspect of Gopinath’s art – his sculptures are virtual dialogues with nature – that mesmerizes a viewer.

The first for his unfailing kindness and generosity, his readiness to help and respond to any request or guidance; the latter for his undoubtedly strong grasp and understanding of materials and the technical aspects of his craft. Gopi-da was also deeply committed to his work, a dedication that remained undiminished till the end. Read more..
