Amal Nath Chakladar

Amal Nath Chakladar was born in 1936 in Mymensingh district of Bangladesh. He came to Kolkata to study in Government College of Art and Craft and graduated from there in 1960. In the later part of his life he joined his alma mater as a teacher. 

He made a contribution in reviving tempera painting in the art scenario of Kolkata with a new form and idiom as an advancement of Neo Bengal School of Art at that time. Many contemporary painters had adapted this method of painting in the medium of tempera thereby helping in the resurgence of a moribund art tradition. His life size portraits in tempera has widely been acclaimed by the artists and art connoisseurs in Kolkata during 1960s.

He had his first solo exhibition in Kolkata in the year 1968. Ever since he has conducted many exhibitions. Other than that, he has participated in many shows all over India and received accolades. Sri Chakladar is also conferred many awards. In the year 2016 he had received Shilpi Maha Samman Award from the Government of West Bengal. His paintings have been collected in India and abroad.

He was an active member of “Calcutta Painters” art group, one of the oldest in India.

Amal Nath Chakladar, ‘Amal da’, was one year senior to me in our Govt. College of Art & Craft, Kolkata. When I was in the first year in 1955, Amal da was in second year. Ganesh Pyne, Debiprasad Saha, Prakash das; all were his classmates. I still remember, Amal da, a very quiet personality, tall, gentle and soft spoken, coming down from upstairs, while going to canteen, in third year.
